13/03/2015: Thai shrimp farms polluting local wells and rivers

On Tuesday, the Thai Navy carried out raids on fifteen shrimp farms in the Phuket area accused of releasing contaminated, salty water into the local fresh water supply, The Phuket News reports.

According to local villagers, and even the head monk of nearby Wat Mai Khao, many fish in local rivers have been killed. Even nearby trees are dying.

More than 30 households in the area are having to spend more than 300 Bhat a month to buy drinking water because their own wells are too contaminated to drink from.

Eight of the farms were found to have leaking drainage systems. They have been given fifteen days to fix the problems or face closure.
