30/03/2016: Jefo seminar in Thailand – 'Life, made easier'

Jefo launched its Thai office on March 28, 2016 at a hotel in Thailand with a new corporate slogan: 'Life, made easier' - for producers, veterinarians, feed manufacturers and consumers.

A seminar on 'Innovative Solutions and New Approaches To Solve Animal Health Concerns' was organised. More than 55 individuals from Thailand as well as from Bangladesh, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam attended the event.

http://jefo.com/

Mr Didier Arnaud, Sales Director, Asia mentioned that the urge to stay closer to partners and bringing quality service at their doorsteps are major motivations to open the office. The office will serve as a hub to offer timely service to the South and South-east Asian region.

Mr Jean-Cristophe Bodin, Innovation & Development Director of Jefo, discussed transformation to the solutions based approach from products. With its diversified range of products from protease to acidifiers to amino acids to toxic binders, Jefo can now provide solutions for a wide range of issues that the industry is facing.

http://jefo.com/

Dr Jowmann Khajarern, a professor from Khon Kaen University discussed 'Feed formulation and management strategies in poultry and swine under tropical conditions.' She emphasised better genetics, better quality feed, efficient environmental and feed management are key for maintaining healthy and happy animals. Additives such as acidifiers and enzymes are important to combat many problems the industry is facing today.

Dr Kabir Chowdhury, Global Technical Manager of Aquaculture discussed the Jefo solution targeting protein optimisation and feed cost reduction available for the industry. He emphasised that cost of proteins is the major cost to produce animal and animal feed. He added that optimisation of protein using protease enzymes not only reduces the cost of feed and animal production but also helps in nitrogenous waste reduction.

30/03/2016: Channel catfish: An overview of nutritional requirements

https://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1601_w1/44
by Herbert E Quintero, PhD, Aquaculture/Fisheries Centre, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, USA

First published in International Aquafeed, January-February 2016

The catfish industry is one of the largest and best developed aquaculture segments in the United States. Commercial production of channel catfish started developing in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and since then feed formulation for catfish started to be tested (Hastings and Dupree, 1969).

The main objective of providing minimal quantities of nutrients has not changed since those earlier studies, but the need for increasing production and optimizing resources has changed. Initially, channel catfish were raised in ponds at low stocking densities and fed low-cost, incomplete diets.

That trend changed by introducing nutritional balanced diets that were developed based on the determination of nutrient requirements of this species starting in the early 1970s (Lovell, 1977). US catfish production increased rapidly from the early 1980s until 2003 when it reached 662 million pounds of catfish processed representing more than half of total aquaculture production.

However that trend shifted and started declining with 300 million pounds of catfish processed in 2012, which represents approximately 55 percent decrease since 2003 (USDA, 2004, Hanson & Sites, 2013).

In recent years, the industry has been striving to develop technological solutions to improve production, including implementing hybridization programs, and intensifying production with the introduction of new technologies such as  the split-pond system and the in-pond raceway system, both of them variations of the partitioned aquaculture system (Brown & Tucker, 2013; Brown et al. 2014).

Fish farming company Marine Harvest has announced that Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye is its preferred location for an UK£80m fish feed factory, the BBC reports.

The company said the development on the site of an old quarry would create 55 full-time permanent jobs.

The plant will produce food for the firm's Scottish fish farms as well as those in Norway, Ireland and the Faroe Islands.

Marine Harvest hopes the new plant will be up and running by 2018.

The company made the announcement after consideration of a number of sites on the west coast.

The Kyleakin site is known as Altanavaig (Allt Anabhaig) quarry.

30/03/2016: OMC Europe 2016: A week to go – details of technical visits released

The 6th Offshore Mariculture Conference is just a week away. In 2014, the Conference attracted delegates from 28 countries from a plethora of sectors that make up the offshore mariculture and aquaculture industry. 51 percent of attendees came from Europe, whilst the majority of the remainder came, most noticeably, from the Americas. Sales to date are up on 2014 bookings, and we predict another equally diverse and engaging mix of delegates in 2016.

Read the full programme HERE.
With the ongoing need for growth in aquaculture, the conference will help fish farmers and producers to grow their business, whether it be through moving from coastal to offshore/high energy sites or simply by adding value through intelligent processing and responsible, sustainable aquaculture.

Following the keynote addresses by Ernesto Penas Lado, Director: Directorate A — Policy development and coordination: DG MARE — Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Michael Rubino, Director, Office of Aquaculture, NOAA Fisheries Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the first session will cover the challenges and opportunities represented by moving to high energy or offshore farming sites.

http://www.offshoremariculture.com/europe
Delegates have the opportunity to visit the Mercabarna Central Fish Market, Barcelona on day three
The following presentations will be included:
  • Donna Lanzetta, CEO, Manna Fish Farms: Offshore mariculture – where and why?
  • Alonso Echevarria Ubilla, Director, AEX Group: Analysis of an offshore aquaculture system in the Ecuadorian coast

29/03/2016: Aller Aqua Group builds new factory in Zambia

Aller Aqua Group by Christiansfeld in Denmark is one of Europe’s largest producers of environmentally friendly fish feed. The company now takes further measures in their proactive growth strategy by building a new factory in Zambia.

One year ago, Aller Aqua’s new factory in Egypt was inaugurated, and the company has now decided to build another factory on the African continent, which plays a large part in the company’s growth strategy.

Aller Aqua has partnered with Yalelo Limited as a  key client.  Yalelo has grown quickly to become one of the world’s leading tilapia aquaculture firms.  Alongside the construction of Aller Aqua’s Zambian fish feed factory,  Yalelo has commenced an expansion project to increase production to 20.000-30.000 tons of Tilapia within the next few years.

The new company and factory will be called Aller Aqua Zambia, and will be the largest and most modern of its kind in Africa. It will have a capacity of 50.000 tons of feed per year, and the investment is approximately 10 million USD, explains Henrik Halken, Group Vice President, who is responsible for the company’s activities on the African continent.

Both companies see great prospects in the collaboration. It will ensure Yalelo access to the best feed on the market – and thus enable the company’s continued growth.

To Aller Aqua Group, Yalelo’s offtake provides commercial security. This enables a larger initial investment in building a world-class fish feed factory from inception.

The fish feed factory gives Aller Aqua a great basis for expansion in Zambia, a country which aims to be self-sufficient with farmed fish – but also able to export to neighboring countries such as: Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania and Congo.

“The factory will be situated near the town Siavonga, on the shore of Lake Kariba, and is expected to be ready mid-2017, provided that the final commitments and permits are given from various authorities and institutions as expected” says Henrik Halken.

The market is expanding, and so is Aller Aqua Group

Demand for affordable protein is growing quickly in Africa, which is one of the world’s fastest growing regions by both population and income.  Aquaculture is expected to play a significant role in African food security and lakes such as Kariba, Victoria and Volta offer high potential.

Today half of the fish consumed worldwide are farmed.  Fish farming is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way of producing protein for a growing population.

“With the great potential in Africa it is important that we are present. Aller Aqua needs to make the most of the momentum we have created over the last few years.

We have experienced significant growth in Egypt in 2015 and created two new sales subsidiaries in both Kenya and Nigeria, both of which contribute positively to the company’s growth.

The feed for these two markets comes from our European factories and contribute positively here.  In Zambia and the region we plan to replicate our experience of supporting smallholder fish farmers through training in the use of more efficient commercial fish feeds.

With the new factory in Zambia Aller Aqua Group will consolidate its position as the largest producer of environmentally friendlyextruded fish feed in Africa” states Henrik Halken.

24/03/2016: Aquaculture UK 2016 — bigger and better than ever!

For the past ten years Aquaculture UK has grown ever more valuable to all sections of the national and international aquaculture industry — bringing together decision makers from more than 30 countries worldwide.

Today this ground-breaking exhibition, conference and gala dinner is recognised as the essential place to launch and promote new products, meet new customers, establish relationships with buyers and suppliers, and network with everyone from industry influencers to leading academics, hands-on researchers, government agencies and international journalists.

Taking place for the fifth time at Aviemore, Scotland on May 25-26, Aquaculture UK has 45 percent more exhibition space than previous years, with over 100 exhibitors already booked and is expecting a record high of more than 1000 expected visitors over the course of the two days.

Founder David Mack, who has recently handed over the reins for Aquaculture UK to 5M publishing, says, “Attendees have always felt that Aquaculture UK is an unmissable event and it is. The location, size and ease of access of the location really works. All the hotels, conference rooms and the exhibition hall in Aviemore are within 200-300 metres of each other which means it is very easy to carry on networking long after the official opening times."

"The bar of the Highland Hotel buzzes till early in the morning as delegates and exhibitors catch up on industry matters and gossip. In Scotland we had several years of rapid growth, even during the recession and this is reflected by the growth in the show. Going forward, feedback has been taken from previous events to make this year's show the biggest and the best yet!”

Reaching new customers….
Major sponsors and exhibitors at this year's event include VAKI, Aquapharma, Skretting, FAIVRE, Fish Vet Group, EWOS, Biomar, AKVA, KJ and Mohn Aqua as well as many more.

Although it is undoubtedly a highly important event in Scotland and the UK, the show has grown to become a truly international event with exhibitors from Europe, Canada, Peru, Israel, Iceland and the USA.

Jonn Sólheim Thomsen at KJ, the largest supplier of cages and catamarans to the Faroese salmon industry says, “We are coming back this year because Aquaculture UK 2014 was very good for us. We met many people from the industry and received orders on both cages and catamarans. We are now looking forward to Aquaculture UK 2016 to meet both current and future customers.”

Mal Scott from Mohn Aqua, who will also be exhibiting at the show added, "We are delighted to be exhibiting at Aquaculture UK 2016. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase our new product range to new and existing customers from around the globe. This year we will be excited to be displaying our new Fish Health Monitoring System that can detect and count Sea Lice automatically."

Pushing Boundaries….
New this year and coming on board as a major supporter of the event is the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) who will be hosting a conference on the second day.

They plan to poll visitors to Aquaculture UK on the first day and then discuss the results via an in-depth roundtable on day 2. The focus is on making sure the discussions at the conference reflect the most important issues relevant to this year’s visitors.

It is hoped that this will facilitate the sharing of best practice and enable delegates to address the industry's hottest topics from Sea Lice to Anaemic Gill Disease to Cleaner Fish and more.

The conference will also include workshops on what a national centre for aquaculture might look like and a focus session on DZR developments. The involvement of the SAIC is all about strengthening the links between the aquaculture industry and the research community in order to facilitate further commercial success and economic growth.

Tomorrow’s industry leaders….
Elanco Animal Health will again sponsor the Young Scientist Award for Best Student Presentation and this competition will take place on the first day.

The winner will receive an amazing all-expenses paid visit to Elanco’s dedicated Aquaculture R&D site on Prince Edward Island, Canada where they will meet with their leading scientists involved in vaccines, and the latest pharmaceutical and technological innovations.

The 2014 winner was Marie Smedley and she visited Elanco's Aqua Health Facilities in Canada as well as Cooke Aquaculture, the Atlantic Vet School and Aquabounty.

“For me the conference was an exciting chance to communicate my Phd research to a wider audience in the aquaculture dominion. Visiting the Elanco facilities in Canada, gave me a unique opportunity to network and learn of ongoing research in aquatic health and production.

As a young researcher, Aquaculture UK is an amazing introduction to the UK industry as it is probably the most important platform for stakeholders in the UK Aquaculture sector.”

Commenting on why they sponsor this award, Elanco's Global Head of Aqua Business says, “We have a rich history of aquaculture innovation and we believe that encouraging young, talented scientists is pivotal to building the future of our industry. Our commitment to research and innovation for the aquaculture industry involves active collaboration with a wide industry network that extends from academic institutions to our own customers.”

Network… at our Gala Dinner...
A highlight of the event as in previous years, will be the Aquaculture UK 2016 Awards Gala Dinner to celebrate the UK Aquaculture industry. Held on Wednesday 25th May at the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort the dinner includes pre-dinner entertainment and will be a great opportunity to meet and relax with suppliers and clients at the end of the first day.

22/03/2016: Channel catfish

https://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1601_w1/42

First published in International Aquafeed, January-February 2016

The Latin names of some aquatic species can have fascinatingly obscure meanings that provide anyone in need of a hobby with hours of joyful investigation and speculation. The channel catfish is, alas, not one of them: Ictalurus punctatus simply means ‘spotty catfish’, and the briefest glance at one will tell you why.

Not everything about this species is so obvious, however. Although the US Fish and Fisheries Commission began collecting this species from its native Mississippi River Valley in the 1870s, it was 1890 before they got it to spawn in captivity, and only then did they realise the eggs were guarded by the male.

It would be a further 26 years before farmers discovered the productive gains to be had by providing the fish with a container to use as a nest. And only in 1929 was it understood that the male fish fanned their eggs for a reason, and that perhaps we ought to start doing so too.

Commercial aquaculture of this species wasn’t really considered economically viable until the end of the 1950s - over 80 years after collection and stocking first began.

Channel catfish have been widely introduced throughout the USA and abroad: mainly Russia, Latin America and China. Indeed, China now even exports a small amount of this fish back to its native country.

In the US and China, channel catfish are grown in ponds, tanks and raceways. Cages tend not to be used. The water needs to be warm; in some northern climes this is sometimes achieved using geothermal waters or even the heated waters coming from electric power plants.

Feed tends to be plant derived proteins, but vitamin supplements may be added, especially in indoor cultivation systems. Harvesting is done with wide-mesh seine nets so only fish of marketable size are taken.

Although currently popular across the US due to its image as a healthy food, the future market for channel catfish is uncertain, owing to competition from imported species.

Compared with its traditional pellet mill, the SZLH528 optimizes its paddle’s structure and distribution, which can make materials fully mixed while providing a sufficiently long conditioning time, with improved cooking and mixing effects. It adopts a gear-type driving system and achieves a production output 15 percent more efficient than belt conveyors.

The innovative design of the gear box and driving system make the transmission more stable and reliable. Chute structure and automatic discharging system have also been improved. Features such as outer oil lubrication, anti-blockage die holes and pneumatic outer discharge of material ensure the equipment works safely and tightly attaining high levels of hygiene and free of leaks. The main shaft temperature alarm system improves the stability of the main drive.

The gears use top quality steel, giving them a life of more than 30,000 hours.  The SPHS218F produces a variety of high-grade extruded aquaculture feeds, pet foods and sinking fish feed. It is widely used in the following areas: extruding of bullfrog feed, weever feed, shrimp feed and crab feed. It uses a high-precision inverter, feeds more evenly than regular feeders, has high capacity, better stability and easy access.

Employing a user-friendly design for steam and water injection, it can detect flow on-line and add liquid accordingly. The special design of mixing shaft and blade effectively improves maturity level and mixing evenness. It can add up to 30 percent water and steam which can be evenly mixed. High hardness, wear-resistant alloy screws and bushing greatly improve the service life of the parts subjected to the greatest wear.
As a professional supplier of pellet mills and a machine manufacturer, we try to supply our customers with the most up-to-date machines and most effective and careful after-sale services.
